IMA demands Nationwide Lockdown, slams govt for not taking health experts’ advice

The Indian Medical Association (IMA) has, on 8th May, demanded the central government to impose complete nationwide lockdown tp effectively break the COVID-19 chain.

In a press release issued by IMA, the association has slammed the Union Health Ministry for failing to combat the second wave of the pandemic. The association said that it is “astonished to see the extreme lethargy and inappropriate actions” and alleged that the ministry has not paid any heed to the suggestions of the health experts.

IMA alleged that the union health ministry has been taking ineffective decisions “without realizing the ground realities” and the expert medical advices have been put in the “dustbin”.

The statement said, “In the last 20 days, the association has been insisting on the need for complete, well-planned pre-announced national lockdown rather than a few states declaring lockdown ranging for 10 days to 15 days – so as to get breathing time for the healthcare infrastructure to recoup and replenish both the material and manpower. Lockdown will break the chain of devastating spread.”

The association blamed the government for failing to consult the health experts before taking decisions, be it the oxygen crisis or manpower shortage which it dealt with knee jerk reaction.

IMA demanded that there should be a complete revamp of the entire Covid-19 management by the central government ranging from containment measures, vaccine shortage, drugs shortage and manpower shortage among others. And that the entire healthcare administration be revamped with well versed cadets of the Indian Medical Service (IMS).
